"I shot Annalise Keating, but I was drugged by someone and I remember who that is now. It was Philip Jessup"
—Catherine Hapstall during her preliminary hearing[src]

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Hapstall was a preliminary hearing that took place following the Night at the Hapstall Mansion. Annalise Keating rang 911 and alleged that she was shot by Catherine Hapstall so she was arrested and charged with Annalise's attempted murder and the murder of Emily Sinclair. Caleb Hapstall didn't believe that his sister shot anybody but was convinced by Annalise to tell Catherine to put it all on Philip Jessup, which Catherine ended up doing.

Events[]

Annalise had recently got out of hospital when the hearing took place. She was using mind altering pain killers and Bonnie realised that Annalise wasn't fit to take the stand, so she instructed the Keating 5 and Frank to write up a statement that Denver could present during the hearing as Annalise's written testimony. When Annalise and Denver found out about this they weren't happy but Bonnie was able to convince them.

During the hearing, Denver presented Annalise's 911 call as evidence as well as her written testimony. A.D.A Robin LaForge objected the use of a written testimony and it was sustained by Judge Wenona Sansbury. Laurel stepped outside the room and rang Annalise, asking what to do since the judge ruled against her written statement being admissible evidence. Annalise said she would be right over. She arrived while Dr. Takahamo was on the stand. He testified that Emily Sinclair's injuries were not just consistent with a fall and he believed the body had been struck prior to the fall. A.D.A LaForge interrupted to alert the court that Annalise had arrived.

Annalise took the stand and was crossed by Denver, who asked about the timeline of events the night of the shooting. Annalise mentioned that Catherine looked physically unwell, causing LaForge to object. Annalise then zoned out and the court went into recess. After recess, LaForge questioned Annalise about inconsistencies in her story, details that didn't make sense and how Dr. Takahamo testified that Sinclair's body showed inconsistencies with death from a fall. Annalise then struggled to answer more questions by LaForge and ended up intentionally breaking privilege to make Catherine look like a victim. She told Caleb as such during another recess and convinced him to get Catherine to put it all on Philip. She ended up doing this by admitting that she shot Annalise but only because she was drugged by Philip. She ended up getting convicted for the shooting of Annalise and murder of Emily Sinclair.
