- "I blame a world that lets you own a gun and that lets you grow up without love, 'cause if what you're saying is true this was an accident, and I don't see the point in your whole life being ruined because of one terrible mistake. So, this is a selfish act I am doing here, Jason, forgiving you, because I can't live the rest of my life being angry."
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Murray was Annalise's first case back after being shot by Wes and going into recovery. Jason Murray plead guilty to second-degree murder of Tyler Robinson. During what should have been a simple plea hearing, the victim's mother Joyce Robinson interrupted the judge to say that both attorneys on the case refused to listen to her and she wanted to be heard. Annalise said it would be unfair for her to hijack the process and Joyce cut in and said she wanted Jason to have a shorter sentence. The hearing ended with judge Corrine Stefano ruling that they had to hold a restorative justice hearing before a plea deal is reached.
Case[]
Back at the house Bonnie explained to Asher, Connor and Michaela that in the hearing Joyce would first make her statement before Jason, both detailing how the crime had affected them. Michaela cut in saying Joyce was just getting to be judge and jury so Bonnie decided she had to help her prep Jason for his statement. Laurel wasn't there because she went to help Wes who was being held in the psych ward for threatening to commit suicide.
Once Bonnie and Michaela met with Jason, he explained that Tyler slept with his girlfriend so Jason went to confront him at his job. He said his intent was just to scare Tyler but he started a fight and during the commotion the gun 'went off'. Michaela asked if Jason stole Tyler's phone and he said he just ran after the gun 'went off', not even being aware that Tyler was shot. He then began to rehearse what he would say during the hearing and was distracted by Michaela giving him a dirty look. Back at the house, Frank and Bonnie were talking to Annalise when she walked through to the living room and kicked everybody out, telling them to work on the case somewhere else, because she 'wanted her house back'.
The next day, Bonnie and Michaela met with Annalise to show her that Tyler's last text was different to all of his previous ones. Annalise confronted Jason with this information and he revealed that he sent the last text to Tyler's mum. During the hearing, everything went according to plan at the start. Joyce made her statement, there was a recess and Jason's started out fine but he ended up confessing that he shot Tyler on purpose. He said he saw the blood everywhere and knew Tyler was dying, heard his phone and texted 'found a ride and I luv you' to Joyce before fleeing the scene. Following that, A.D.A Leigh rescinded the 15 year plea deal that had been originally agreed upon. and told Annalise she would be going for the death penalty.
Later at the house, Annalise told the Keating 4 that the plan was to have the prosecutor present the original deal again. Connor was confused and Michaela didn't want to do it. Annalise said that none of them had been to jail and they were fine with it because they felt their lives were worth something, so Jason's life was worth something too. This caused Laurel to question if the same applied to Wes, that he was in a psych word and Annalise didn't care. Then everybody got angry and left, leaving just Annalise, Frank and Bonnie. After a brief pause Annalise mentioned how she planned to get back Jason's original deal as if nothing had happened.
Later in court, A.D.A Leigh said the Commonwealth would be seeking the death penalty so Annalise handed the judge a file of precedents to prove that it was illegal to change the defendant's charge after a restorative justice hearing. She also asked that Leigh be removed from the case due to bias against Jason. The two went back and forth, neither changing their stance, until the judge spoke and asked if the prosecution was truly prepared to seek capital punishment, to which they said no but only if Leigh t Jason agreed to life in prison without parole. Jason said he wanted to take the deal, Joyce and Annalise tried to stop him but he was adamant. At the end Jason was taken away in handcuffs with Joyce giving him her number.
