Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Mahoney was a case that Annalise was heavily involved in an unofficial capacity in the middle of season 3. Wallace Mahoney was shot dead in the street right in front of Wes. It was immediately apparent to Wes that Frank was the shooter and he told Annalise as such.
Case[]
On May 6 2015, Wallace Mahoney was shot dead in the street right in front of Wes by Frank. Wes, being the only witness, was questioned by detectives soon after. He told them he was asking Wallace for directions and then he just got hot right in front of him. The detectives were skeptical and asked if the person Wallace was on the phone with would verify that Wes was just asking for directions.
4 months later, there was still no suspects in the case. Bonnie's father had died so she went to Coalport, knowing that it was Frank. The two met up and she recorded him confessing to killing Wallace, as assurance that Annalise wouldn't go after him. A few days later Laurel and Wes went to tell Annalise that Bonnie was with Frank. Meggy was stopped by detectives outside Wes' apartment so she tried to make contact with him and ended up reaching Laurel. The detectives wanted to question Wes again. Annalise believed that Frank gave the police Wes' name to make him a suspect. Bonnie played the voice recording of Frank confessing but Annalise said it cannot be used and locked it in her desk.
The next evening Bonnie suggested Vince Levin as Wes' attorney so he could go in for his police interview but Annalise wasn't so sure. She later changed her mind and had Bonnie arrange for Vince to meet Wes at the Keating house that night. After court, Annalise and Bonnie went back to the house to find Vince waiting outside the front door. They quickly discovered that Wes wasn't there and had taken the voice recording of Frank confessing out of Annalise's desk. He destroyed it at Laurel's apartment and then saw the news that Charles Mahoney had been arrested for his father's murder after the murder weapon with his fingerprints on it was found inside his car. This was planted by Frank. ("It's About Frank", "Is Someone Really Dead?")
Wes went in for the interview with Vince as his attorney and the detectives asked if he happened to see Charles, to which Wes said yes. He said Charles was standing across the street and looked distressed, so he walked over and spoke with Wallace about 'directions' instead. Later, it was announced by Charles' attorney Dana Benton on the news that he had an alibi, which was a problem. Bonnie asked the Keating 5 to help come up with ways to stall the preliminary hearing so that Frank had time to find the alibi. Michaela and Connor refused to help but the rest stay. Wes ended up suggesting giving the defense his medical records so he is made to sit a psychiatric evaluation, pushing the hearing. Bonnie agreed and sent him and Laurel to retrieve his records.
Later, Frank discovered that Lisa Cameron was the alibi for Charles, the lady who gave Frank the money to plant a bug in Annalise's hotel room. That evening Vince confronted Annalise, claiming that he was informed Wes was being made to sit a psychiatric evaluation before his testimony, and he knew Annalise was the one who gave the defense his medical records. He insisted that any further interference in the case would be reported to the disciplinary board.
Meanwhile Frank broke into Lisa's house and Annalise told him to get out, before leaving for the store. When she was gone, Bonnie told Frank to go back in and kill Lisa because it was what Annalise needed. During that phone call, Annalise returned with a burner phone, planning to use it to discredit Lisa as an alibi.
The burner phone was delivered to Charles in his cell, and Frank called the burner using Lisa's house phone to make it seem like they were conspiring. Wes passed his psychiatric evaluation and was cleared to testify. He testified that he saw Charles before crossing the street to ask Wallace for directions. His testimony paired with other evidence like the burner phone and a financial motive was enough for the judge to rule that the case may proceed to trial. ("No More Blood")
Charles Mahoney was released from prison following Wes' death, and the charges against him were dropped. ("He Made a Terrible Mistake")
