- "I know what I did was wrong, but I just don't feel it was wrong."
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Crawford started out as a straightforward case where Andrew Crawford plead guilty to first degree murder. During the sentencing hearing he told Annalise Keating that he wanted to change his plea after seeing Agnes Wills. As a result Annalise told the court that Andrew wanted to withdraw his plea and had to make up a reason why, so she chose to blame herself saying that she pressured him. She explained that Sam's death prevented her from properly explaining her client's options and now that she had the time he had changed his mind. The judge accepted the not guilty plea and so the building of a defense began.
Case[]
The Keating 5 start by travelling to the scene of the crime. They met with Joe the janitor who explained how he found the body. Andrew was the first person he suspected because of a argument he heard earlier that week in which Andrew wanted to take over as head pastor after Bernard retired. Meanwhile Annalise met with Agnes and asked if she knew anything to support the defense. Agnes didn't deny being in love with Andrew but said there was nothing she could do.
The Keating 5 then began interviewing students about anything they knew and one student, Zach, said that Brian Kamens hanged himself after spending a lot of time with Andrew in the photography dark room. Annalise confronted him with the possibility he was molesting a student so he came clean and explained how and when he murdered Bernard. Brian had told Andrew that he was being abused and shortly after he committed suicide, Andrew found out that person was Bernard via the confession booth. He was initially going to report what Bernard had said in the booth but he was concerned that he would just find another child to abuse, so Andrew followed him out and killed him.
Annalise told the Keating 5 they couldn't mention the child abuse in court because Andrew believed it to be a sin to testify to what was said in the booth, and the law agreed with him. Connor suggested using Agnes but Annalise said no to that too. After that Annalise met with Andrew to convince him to testify that he killed Bernard because he was a child abuser, but Andrew was adamant he would not do it. The next day she met with Agnes again to convince her to testify and did so succfessfully.
Later in court, Agnes took the stand and began testifying that she was with Andrew at the time the murder occurred, having sex. Prosecutor Karen Hawleyobjected, saying there was no notice of an alibi defense and if it was true it would have been discovered in the investigation. The judge called a recess. After, Karen began her cross of Agnes and was asking very direct questions but the judge ruled she was allowed because it was an alibi witness. After a few questions Andrew got up and changed his plea back to guilty because he couldn't bare the lies Agnes was telling.
