How to Get Away with Murder Wiki

"It's easy for the prosecution to paint someone like Charles Mahoney as a greedy, money hungry monster out to protect his fortune. It's a cliche that the prosecutor is counting on you to believe, but it's a story he made up. A piece of bad fiction with no merit and not a single piece of hard evidence against my client, Charles."
Annalise Keating's opening statement

Commonwealth of Ohio v. Mahoney is a case that took place in 2005, prior to the events of the show. Charles Mahoney murdered his fiancée Vickie Moran after he discovered that she was an FBI informant. On September 30, denied making a plea deal and chose to stand trial for Vickie Moran's murder, pleading not guilty. A pregnant Annalise Keating was subsequently hired as his lawyer by Wallace Mahoney and flew over to Ohio for the trial.

Case[]

Alexandra Kain testified that Vickie started working with the FBI as an informant three months prior to her death. She states that Vickie was resistant to her previous attempts but changed her mind and agreed to inform on Charles following a physical abuse altercation.

Annalise tried to get Rose Edmond to testify not knowing that the Mahoneys had threatened her child, Christophe Edmond, in order to get her to testify. Rose was Charles' only alibi, though it is implied that she didn't actually see Charles but was coerced into lying because he had raped her ten years prior. Annalise's attempts to have Rose testify were unsuccessful and the pressure of the trial and keeping her son safe from her rapist and his family led to her suicide on October 7, 2005.

Following Rose's death, Annalise wanted to tell Alexandra Kain that Rose was pressured by the Mahoneys to testify. She expressed this in a conversation with Eve Rothlo in her hotel room and it was heard by an associate of Wallace Mahoney who then informed him of what Annalise was planning and he instructed the associate to "take care of" Annalise and her desire to go to the FBI. This resulted in a car crash between Annalise and an unknown driver while she was on her way to speak to FBI agent Alexandra Kain. Following this incident, Annalise returned home to Pennsylvania and was no longer representing Charles.

It is never revealed in the show whether Charles Mahoney ended up getting convicted.
