Season 1[]
Annalise was hired by a member of the Thomas family to represent Gretchen after she supposedly murdered Elke in her sleep and began using a garden hose to clean up the crime scene, which was caught on one of the house's security cameras. In their initial meeting, Gretchen is busy on the phone planning her daughter's birthday party and once Annalise gets her attention she says she doesn't want to take the stand, so Annalise tasks the Keating 5 with prepping each member of the family for their testimonies instead. Michaela preps Claire, Gretchen's mother. Wes preps Matthew, the husband. Laurel preps Mia and Connor preps Cody, the kids.
Cody takes the stand first and testifies that the medication Gretchen takes nightly is to blame and it's not her fault. When prosecutor Rodriguez begins his cross, he accuses Cody of lying which causes him to insist that the whole family loved Elke, especially himself. Cody says he and Elke loved each other, insinuating that they were in a romantic relationship.
Connor goes back to speak with Cody after court and Cody says that his relationship with Elke wasn't perfect, in fact, Elke gave him an STD, specifically trichomoniasis. This causes Michaela to have a breakthrough and rush over to Bonnie to share some information. The next day in court, Matthew is on the stand and Annalise is questioning him about some painful urination Cody came to him about. She then asks Matthew if it made him remember when he experienced the same painful urination and she had his medical records for the prescription tinidazole as evidence for the court. Annalise accuses Matthew of realising that Elke was engaging in a sexual affair with Cody and becoming jealous. She continues, asking Matthew if he encouraged Gretchen to have a glass of wine with dinner the night of the murder. Annalise suggests this was to ensure that when Gretchen took her medication she remained unconscious for long enough to allow Matthew to murder Elke, before waking Gretchen up knowing that she would see the bloody mess he made and try to clean it up. Matthew breaks down and apologises to Gretchen from the stand and is arrested.
