How to Get Away with Murder Wiki

"Who I am is a 53-year-old woman from Memphis, Tennessee named Anna Mae Harkness. I'm ambitious, black, bisexual, angry, sad, strong, sensitive, scared, fierce, talented, exhausted - and I am at your mercy."
—Annalise to jury[src]

Annalise Harkness,[2] Esq (formerly Keating), born Anna Mae, is one of the main characters of How to Get Away with Murder.

Annalise is a self-sufficient and confident woman. She seemed to have a perfect life and was respected for being a great lawyer and a great criminal law professor, whom her students both fear and admire. Annalise is a woman with two faces; one of them, a strong woman, that she shows the world, while the other, a sentimental and destroyed human being, was shown to Nate and Wes.

After the death of her husband Sam Keating at the hands of Wes Gibbins and the rest of the Keating 5, Annalise chooses to protect Wes, who she has a history with, and do everything in her power to move forward. But as they say, no good deed goes unpunished. That wouldn't be the last time Annalise would cover up a murder, and as the bodies keep piling up, the FBI and D.A.'s office suspects her more and more. Through critical decisions, betrayal, more death, and secrets coming out, Annalise continues to project the powerful woman she is onto the corrupt cycle that is Philadelphia's law enforcement.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Ophelia Harkness became pregnant with Annalise, and shortly after she bought her own house, which she described as “not much, but finally hers.” Annalise has a brother and sister named Celestine and Thelonious Harkness, and her father was absent as he left her mother. One day, when Annalise was a child, her uncle Clyde arrived, who asked Ophelia to stay at her house for a few days, while recovering financially. Uncle Clyde was an alcoholic and always fell asleep with a cigarette in his mouth, and one night, Ophelia got up to see Uncle Clyde coming out of Annalise's room. Ophelia knew at that moment that Uncle Clyde had raped Annalise. A few days later, Ophelia found Uncle Clyde passed out drunk, once again with a cigarette still in his mouth that she allowed to start a fire, burning the house down with him inside of it. ("Mama's Here Now")

A couple of years later, Annalise did her undergrad degree at the University of Tennessee where she worked with Memphis Legal Aid alongside attorney Solomon Vick as an intern. She helped client Dwight Haplern get off from a fraud charge.[4] When Annalise was at Harvard law school, she met Eve Rothlo, and they became good friends, but soon after, their relationship became romantic. Both used to have fun but also had difficult times. Annalise and Eve were together until Annalise met Sam Keating, who was married but both ended up falling in love since Sam was the therapist of Annalise. He left his wife for Annalise, and Annalise left Eve for Sam, and then married. She passed the Pennsylvania bar around 1997. ("Pilot", "It's Time to Move On", "Don't Tell Annalise", "Say Goodbye")

In 1999, Annalise and Sam were moving into the Keating House when Sam comes up from the basement holding a bottle of his dad's alcohol that he hid when he lived in the house. Annalise takes one look at it and refuses to drink it. Sam pours her a glass and asks her if she wants to toast their first night in the house with water. With that said, she grabs the glass and downs it along with Sam. She despises the taste and comments that it is the foulest thing that she has ever tasted. Sam agrees and vows to never again drink it. The bottle then goes into the alcohol cupboard where it remained. The two then kiss. It's 2001 and Annalise is in the bathroom. Sam calls from the landing, asking if she is still up with having dinner with the dean. He then walks in and finds her bleeding from her vagina with a toothbrush in her mouth. Annalise realizing that she is probably going to have another miscarriage, starts to cry. Sam tells her that he will call the doctor as if he is in no hurry. ("It's About Frank")

In 2002, her client, Councilman Louis Lindgren was charged with rape, Annalise, her partner, Hugh Murphy and Lindgren travel to the courthouse. After arriving, they are greeted with a wave of reporters. They all try and get him to answer their questions as they walk into the courthouse. Annalise and her partner push the reporters out of the way. They then get stopped for a brief minute as the witness, Bonnie Winterbottom goes past. Once the court is in session, Bonnie is on the stand explaining that she was 14 when she was raped by the Councilman. She explains that her father put her in his office in the basement of City Hall where the councilman would enter and rape her. She tells the court that it ended when she got pregnant, however, as she was being raped by multiple men she had no idea who the father was, nor does she know what happened to her baby once she gave birth. Once the court is in recess, Bonnie sits outside when her attorney goes up to her and tells her that she did a good job testifying. Annalise and her partner exit the building to see Bonnie's lawyer leaving her. Her partner reminds her that Bonnie made the case even more difficult to win with her testimony, but he knows of a person who can fix it. Knowing that he was referring to herself, Annalise comments that she doesn't want to be known for crossing a rape victim. He baits her by practically offering her partner at the law firm if she helps to win the case. At home, she reads through the documents of the case. Sam enters and gives her the fertility medicine. She questions their method when they could just adopt. Sam changes the subject to the case and reminds her that she doesn't have to do what her partner says, she can quit. She brings up her uncle and how the case reminds her of what happened to her as a child. ("I Love Her")

Annalise and Sam. ("I Love Her")

The next time she is in court, Annalise is crossing Bonnie. Annalise questions her while she is on the stand and asks her why she waited so long to tell people what had been happening to her. Bonnie tells her that she was very young and her father was intimidating. Next, Annalise questions Bonnie's memory. She asks how she knows that it was the councilman that raped her and Bonnie responds that she remembered that it was him when she saw him on the TV. She didn't remember him before as she doesn't like to think about what had happened to her when she was younger. Annalise throws her multiple different mental illnesses, each trying to disprove Bonnie's testimony. However, it has the opposite effect. During recess, Hugh asks Annalise if she is trying to lose the case on purpose. He reminds her of what is at stake: her place in the company and tells her to get back in there. Back in court, Annalise is crossing Bonnie again. This time, she questions the existence of her child that supposedly died. Annalise then gets Bonnie to practically admit that there is a chance that the baby might not have existed. Back at her house, Sam arrives home and Annalise informs him of her victory with the case with a drink in her hand. Sam comments that she is drinking alcohol when she shouldn't be. She then tells him that she quit her job. Sam then sits beside her and Annalise tells him that she wants them to help her. Sometime later, Annalise approaches Bonnie. Bonnie at first is horrified by the fact that Annalise would face her after what she did to her in court. But after Annalise tells her that she thinks that she is capable of so much more and offers to get her into a law school, Bonnie agrees. Later, Bonnie shows up on Annalise's doorstep and Sam and Annalise invite her in. ("I Love Her")

Not long after quitting her job at the firm, Annalise goes for a job at Middleton University. Sam and Annalise discuss the fact that everyone will hate them on campus. Annalise reminds him that they only hired her as an assistant professor. Sam tells her that that position is only temporary as she will get tenure eventually. Annalise makes a cocky remark and Sam smiles. The two kiss and presumably have sex. ("It's About Frank", "I Love Her")

305SamAnnalise
Sam and Annalise after a fight. ("It's About Frank")

Around January 2005, Sam visits a prisoner at the prison after his sister asked for his help to help get him out. Once he gets home, he brings up Frank's case with his wife. She reads his charges out loud to Sam and Sam realizes that by the tone of her voice that they don't have a chance. Sam brings up the fact that he helps Bonnie because she asked him to and that she should help Frank because he asked her to. He asks her that there isn't any harm in going to see him for herself before she makes up her mind. Sometime later, Annalise goes to see Frank and bluntly says that the only way that he has any chance of getting out is if he admits to his crimes, even if he didn't commit them. Frank comments that she is different to how he imagined her to be. She asks him why she isn't what he had imagined. Frank thinks that Sam is vanilla and that she is the opposite. Annalise tells him that both of them are far from vanilla. Frank starts asking her personal questions but she gets down to the point and lists his more recent charges. She calls him a moron as no one who wants to get out would commit these crimes when they are up for parole. Frank tells her that he has always been a moron. ("It's About Frank")

305AnnaliseTalkingFrank
Annalise talking to Frank about his case. ("It's About Frank")

Once home again, Annalise tells her husband that Frank lied to her. That he is committing these crimes so that he doesn't have to deal with the real world. She tells him that she has a hard enough time trying to get the people who want to get out of prison out. Sam asks her if she sees in him what he saw. Annalise tells him that she thinks Frank was in need of a father figure. The two start to argue and Annalise brings up that ever since she had refused to have IVF that he won't even touch her. Sam walks over to her and holds her and tells her that she is all that he needs and that if he has made her feel that way that he is sorry. Annalise then gets talked into taking Franks case and goes to see him. She explains that parole cases can take a while and that for some reason, her husband has taken interest in him. She tells him that if she helps him that he can't lie to her again. Frank agrees and Annalise congratulates him on getting himself a lawyer. She then gets out a voice recorder and the file on the murder of his father. She tells him that they need to go over what happened to his father. Annalise pauses for a moment, about to be sick but it passes and continues for a moment and then rushes over to the bin to throw up. Frank asks her if she is pregnant and she agrees. Annalise then later wins Franks parole case and Frank is released from prison. ("It's About Frank")

Annalise feeling the pain of pregnancy. ("She Hates Us")

After getting Frank released, Sam manages to convince Annalise to hire Frank Delfino to be part of her firm, although the latter accepts reluctantly. Months later, around September 2005, Annalise only has around a month left of her pregnancy. Among the Keating 4 is Bonnie Winterbottom, who seems to be the one who listens most and makes things better. One day, Annalise suffered from back pains from carrying the baby and Bonnie assisted her with the pain. One of the directors of Middleton University manages to convince Annalise to take the Mahoney Case, a millionaire family made up of Wallace Mahoney, the father and owner of the company "Mahoney Hedge Management"; His wife Sylvia Mahoney; And their son, Charles Mahoney, who is accused of murdering his fiancee Vicky. Annalise then flew to Cleveland, Ohio for the case. Once there she talks to Wallace who encourages her to talk to Rose Edmond and encourage her to come forward as Charles' alibi for the night that Vicky was murdered in the trial. ("She Hates Us")

Rose tells Annalise that she saw Charles the night Vicky was murdered, and therefore was not at the scene of the crime. However, Annalise discovers that Wallace actually threatened the life of Rose's son, Christophe in order to get her to say that she saw Charles on the night that Vicky was murdered. Annalise calls Eve to help Rose when she has herself processed for deportation, but they just want to scare her into helping the case. Rose agrees, however, once she gets home she quickly packs a bag and attempts to leave the city with her son, however, on the way out of the city, Christophe refuses to go with his mother and leaves the car and runs out of view. Rose returns to her apartment waiting for Christophe and Annalise shows up. Rose discovers that the only option to protect her son is to take her own life so she takes a knife and jams it into her neck, committing suicide. Annalise doesn't realize what is happening before it already happened. Realizing how bad it looked Annalise being at the apartment where Rose killed herself, she leaves and notices footsteps approaching and hides around the corner outside the apartment. The footsteps are revealed to be Christophe's and he walks into the room to find his mother, bleeding out on the kitchen floor with a knife sticking out of her throat. Annalise then sneaks off.("It's a Trap", "Something Bad Happened")

Wallace Mahoney talks to Annalise and she ensures him that Rose committed suicide to protect her son from him, and soon deduces that Wallace raped Rose several times. Wallace does not deny it and threatens her. Once he leaves, Annalise asks Eve for help, but when she tells her that they shouldn't as the Mahoney's are very dangerous. So Annalise decides to go to the police station herself. What Annalise didn't know was that the apartment was bugged by Frank and Wallace heard every word that Annalise said. On the way to the station, a car crashes into the driver's side of the car and she is rushed to the hospital where she has an emergency c-section as the doctors can't find the baby's heartbeat. In surgery, after removing the child from her belly they try to do everything possible to save it, but it is too late. The doctor gives her baby to Annalise and she hugs him. Annalise apologizes to her lifeless baby, and then Sam arrives. Annalise tells him that it is all her fault and that she shouldn't have taken the case. Sam tells her it was just an accident, and that it is no one's fault. A nurse interrupts them to ask if they want a picture of the three, since other couples usually want at least one picture before leaving their baby. Sam accepts and after the photo, Annalise tells Sam to take the child once the picture is taken. ("There's My Baby")

Still at the hospital, Eve approaches Sam while he is getting a snack from the snack machine, and tells him that he does not know her but that he is a colleague of Annalise in the Mahoney case, and that he wanted to know how Annalise is. Sam tells her that Annalise is fine, but the baby did not survive. Sam tells Eve to tell the Mahoney that she is out of the case and will take her home. Eve tells her she will, and Sam leaves with Annalise. In the room, Sam gives a bottle of water to Annalise and tells him that they will be well and survive all this, but Annalise does not seem to be well. Not long after Sam discovers that Frank was involved in the accident but decides not to tell Annalise anything because the news would destroy her. ("There's My Baby")

Not long after the accident and the death of her son, Annalise tried to commit suicide and was found on the bathroom floor after an overdose on sleeping pills by Bonnie who takes her to the hospital and Sam never knew. Time passed and Annalise and Sam's marriage never recovered and even deteriorated due to the loss of the child. Sam got progressively abusive and emotionless towards Annalise until Annalise suspected that he was cheating on her with someone else. With that in mind, Annalise met Nate Lahey during the summer of 2014, with whom she had an affair also. ("Pilot", "There's My Baby", "Stay Strong, Mama")

Season 1[]

Annalise 101
Annalise welcomes her students to her class, 'Criminal Law 101'. ("Pilot")

Annalise Keating first meets her students on their first day of law school on September 2014, during her Criminal Law 101 class. After welcoming them to the class, she asks them facts on a case called "The Aspirin Assassin". During this she gets to know Connor, Asher, Michaela, Wes and Laurel. She reveals to the class that the case is one she's working on now, so takes the students to see Gina Sadowski, the defendant. As a challenge, Annalise tasks the students to come up with a defense for the case, promising the winners a job in her firm. After hearing all the students ideas, she decides to take a select few to the court hearings. During the first sessions, Annalise questions Linda Tanner, the assistant of the victim. With help from Michaela, who found some vital information, she's able to discredit her testimony. That night, Annalise prepares to have sex with detective Nate Lahey in her office, but she's caught by Wes who came with a suggestion for the trial. In the next court session, Annalise is able to point the blame onto someone else with help from Connor, who obtained an email that incriminates another colleague, Lionel Bryant. Annalise attends a formal party that night with her husband, Sam Keating. She confronts Wes, who promises not to tell, and she explains that her marriage is strained because of baby troubles. When Annalise returns to the office with her husband, she's unaware of the jealous looks Bonnie gives when she kisses her husband. The next day in court, incriminating evidence is shown against Gina on a tape, putting their position in danger. Annalise scolds Gina for not telling them she bought aspirin and in a last ditch effort, she brings her love Nate into court and forces him to lie about videotapes being forged with. This finally allows them to win their case and Gina walks free...although guilty. Back in class, Annalise reveals the winners of the competition and the ones who'll work at her firm: Connor, Michaela, Asher, Laurel and Wes. Wes questions the legitimacy of him winning, but she insists she liked his idea when he presented it. That night, when missing girl Lila Stangard's dead body is found, Annalise comforts her husband as she was one of his students. She then finishes by commenting that she bets the boyfriend did it. ("Pilot")

Annalise 102
Annalise asks Nate for help when she believes Sam killed Lila Stangard. ("It's All Her Fault")

Annalise reads an article on Lila Stangard one morning and finds it odd when Sam comments that her body being in a water tank would’ve destroyed most evidence. Later on, during a lecture, Annalise introduces the next case she’s working on. She takes her chosen students to visit Max St. Vincent’s house where he preserved the murder scene of his wife. She tasks them with coming up with something to help win the case. When they head back to the office, Annalise takes Wes aside to give him a personal task for the case. The other students comment how odd it is that he was even picked. Wes completes the task, but points out a discrepancy. Annalise uses this to discredit a witness in the case, Jake Dorsey. She then uses information gained by Connor to discredit any motive to kill. And finally, with help from Asher raiding bins, she’s able to come up with an alibi for Max. After a court session, Annalise runs into Nate. She tries to apologize for embarrassing him on the stand, but he threatens to reveal everything if she speaks to him again. That night, at home, Annalise goes through Sam's phone and discovers that he'd been messaging Lila. The next step for Max's case is introducing a character witness, they bring in his daughter, Eloise who shows she'd happily let him die if he ended up being guilty. However, in the courthouse, it's shockingly revealed that Max's first wife had also been murdered in a similar fashion to his second wife. Annalise scolds Max for keeping this fact a secret. Back at the office, Annalise asks Sam if he was sleeping with Lila. However, he insists he didn't. The next day at court, thanks to Laurel, Annalise proves that even though Max killed his first wife, he didn't kill the one he's on trial for because of the differences in the two killings. This ends up winning her case for her. Back at home, Annalise checks Sam's phone again and discovers he deleted messages from Lila. She is then is forced to sleep with Sam to prove she trusts him, however, afterwards she begins crying. She then sneaks out to find Nate and she asks him for help, claiming she thinks Sam killed Lila. ("It's All Her Fault")

At her house, Annalise is packing Sam's things. She tells him that he is stupid as he told Bonnie that he got Lila pregnant and Bonnie would tell Annalise everything he said. Annalise walks down the stairs with a suitcase full of Sam's things and throws it out the door. Sam tells her to stop for a second but just Annalise tells him to get out of the house. Sam begins to beg for her not to give up on him. She tells him that she already has. Sam is still not moving so Annalise threatens to call 911. He walks over to her and angrily snatches the phone out of her hands and throws it at the wall. Sam tells Annalise that he is not a violent man but she tells him that everyone can be violent given the chance. Sam continues to deny that he is a violent man. Moving to the kitchen, the two stand on opposite sides. Sam claims to still be the man she married. Annalise thinks otherwise. Sam tells Annalise that she is some scared little girl who pretends to be strong but who is really just weak and selfish. She claims to have done everything that she could to protect him. Annalise comes clean about screwing Nate. She taunts him by telling him everything they have done together. As Sam walks away, she continues to tell him things that they do together and that the only reason she was able to stand Sam having sex with her was that she used to think of Nate. He grabs her by the neck and pins her to the wall and says that he used to think of Lila when they were together. Annalise asks him is he did kill her. Sam releases his grip on her neck and tells her that she is a monster. Sam asks her if she wants the truth and tells her that she's nothing but a piece of ass, that was what he saw when he fist talked to her because he knew that she would go for him and that's all she's really good for. Annalise tells him that they are finally speaking the truth to each other and walks out, gets into her car and drives away. Rebecca is across the street and watches as she leaves. ("Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me")

Annalise is sat in her car crying. She is at the police station but doesn't go in. She then goes back to her house and finds her husband's dead body on the floor with blood all over the house. Not long later, Wes enters and starts to clean up the body when he realises that Annalise is sat across the room watching his every move. Wes tells her what happened and she vows to help him and the others cover it up. As an alibi, Annalise goes to Nate's apartment. When he opens the door, Annalise says that she knows that she can't be there, but she doesn't have anywhere else to go. She tells him that she went to the police station as she was going to tell them everything. She walks in and closes the door. Annalise tells Nate that he was right. She thinks Sam killed Lila. She tells him that Sam lied to her about everything, that he knew Lila was pregnant. Nate sits beside her on the couch and asks her if she has told anyone. She tells him that she has only told him and that she told the D.A. to run DNA tests on all the men in Lila's life, even her teachers. Annalise thinks that she should leave. Nate asks her where she will go and Annalise doesn't know. She tells him that she will probably go to a hotel and tells him not to worry as she won't go back to the house. Nate stands up and tells her that she is too upset to go anywhere and tells her that she needs to stay until she has calmed down. Annalise reuses but comes round to the idea. Annalise calls Sam to see if he picks up but he doesn't. Annalise tells Nate that its probably better that he didn't answer anyway. She looks over and sees a photo of Nate and his wife's wedding. She asks Nate if he thinks they're terrible people. Nate leans forward and grabs her hand and tells her that he doesn't know and it depends on who they ask. Annalise goes to pull away but Nate pulls her onto his lap and kisses her. They start removing each others clothes while kissing. Nate lifts her up and they start to have sex on a wall. ("Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me")

109AnnaliseCallsBonnie
Annalise calls Bonnie about Sam. ("Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me")

Annalise quietly leaves Nate's apartment after having sex, gets in her car and drives home. She calls Sam again and leaves him a voice message. She tells him that she didn't think that he would pick up. She tells him that she's still got a lot to say to him but she doesn't want to do it by phone but she has no other choice. She tells him that they built a life together for 20 years. She tells him that she didn't mean all of the horrible things that they have said to each other and to forgive her. Annalise doesn't want things to end that way. She wants them to work through it and she wants them to be together and that she will stand by him through all of it. She tells him to come home so that they can be together. She then calls Bonnie where she cries over the phone. She asks Bonnie if she is with Sam and Bonnie says no as she isn't and asks why. Annalise tells her that something terrible has happened. ("Freakin' Whack-a-Mole") She tells her that they fought last night after she left and that the D.A. was going to find out that the baby was his. He thinks he is going to go away for the murder. She says that he isn't answering his phone and she's worried that he might have done something stupid. Bonnie tells her to stay right where she is and that she will be right over. ("Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me")

(...)

A few days later, Sam's sister, Hannah Keating , arrives in the city, searching for the truth about what happened to her brother. When Annalise manages to settle things with Hannah, the police find Sam's remains, and Hannah knows Annalize knows more than she looks. Hannah manages to get them to search the house of Annalise, but they find nothing as Annalise cleaned Sam's blood very well. Annalise decides that the only way to solve everything is to get a culprit, so she calls Frank and asks him to incriminate Nate. The police arrest Nate for the murder of Sam, and Hannah returns home, although she tells Annalise that she knows what she caused all of that. Annalise calls her mother because she can no longer blame Nate, and when Ophelia arrives, she makes her feel better, even though they have arguments. Annalise decides to help Nate to go free (and gives him the number of a friend , which Nate ends up calling), but Wes calls Annalise very frightened. Annalise arrives at Wes's apartment, finds Wes, Connor, Michaela and Laurel very frightened, and when Annalise asks what's going on, Laurel shows her that they strapped Rebecca with tape and locked her in the bathroom.

They all explain what is happening and take Rebecca to Annalise's house, where they end up taking her to the basement. Everyone thinks that Rebecca murdered Lila and not Sam, but Annalise puts them to task to build a case to prove that she did. In the end neither of them gets anything and Annalise decides to let Rebecca go, but when she's going to release her, she's gone. Everyone thinks someone let her go. Annalise talks to Wes and he tells her that he does not let her go, and Annalise comforts him, since he is very sad, he says it's all his fault. Annalise tells him that Sam did, and that they must believe that to continue their lives, but when Wes leaves, she meets Frank in the basement where they look at Rebecca's body, and they wonder if they killed her, but they arrive at the conclusion that someone else did.

Season 2[]

Annalise and Frank set out to find Rebecca's killer, but she is not very focused on that, and she wants to go ahead and get a new case (although she sees that her students are not so motivated by what happened to Sam), the adopted siblings Caleb and Catherine Hapstall. Eve Rothlo arrives at Annalise's house and asks if it's true that Nate and she killed Sam, and Annalise lies to her but asks her to accept Nate's case. At the end, Eve accepts and takes the case of Nate, but this last one says to him that Annalise inculpates it. When Eve confronts Annalise, she does not deny it, so Eve decides to leave. Frank tells Annalise that Laurel killed Rebecca and that the quietest are the most dangerous, but Annalise discovers that Bonnie killed Rebecca because she thinks she was the one who killed Lila and wanted to blame Sam. Annalise confronts Bonnie and she does not deny it but tells her she did it for her and they both argue until finally Annalise goes and arrives at Eve's house. Both begin to talk and Annalise tells her that Nate is innocent and that she is protecting the person who did kill Sam, and then they talk about the old days and begin to kiss. Annalise remembers the old days and how she used to have fun, so for the Keating 4 to get on with their lives, she decides to take them to a club at night. ("It's Time to Move On")

Eve manages to win Nate's case, but in the process, she wounds Annalise's feelings by humiliating her before the court, shouting that she kills Sam and blames Nate (although there is no evidence that neither has done so). Annalise forgives Eve, and she invites her to New York, but Annalise does not call her or say no. Shortly after, Annalise confronts the loneliness since there is no one in the house and it goes away being drunk, until after a case decides to speak with Nate; He tells her he needs time. The next week he gets the call from Nia Lahey (Nate's sick wife), and when he goes to the hospital to visit her she asks him to help her die. Annalise considers it, but in the end decides not to do it, although it asks to him some pills to Frank. Leaving the hospital at night, after waiting for Catherine Hapstall (who takes a test to help her case), Annalise finds that Nate and Wes are up to something. Shortly afterwards Frank also informs Annalize that Levi, Rebecca's adopted brother, is looking for answers, while spending time with Wes and Michaela; And that Bonnie had to lie to Asher (saying that she murdered Sam because he tried to rape her) so that he would not testify against everyone in the house with Sinclair, who has a personal vengeance against her; Annalise begins to panic as everything is a disaster.

Annalise tries to get rid of Levi and the doubts of the Keating 4, but despite Bonnie's attempts, Asher still thinks about testifying, until Annalise shows Asher Bonnie's past: Bonnie was raped when she was little by her own father. Annalise also talks to Nate and he tells her that he hates her and that Wes believes she kills Rebecca, and not long after Wes sees her out of Nate's apartment and she talks to him, assuring him that she knows nothing about Rebecca. When Bonnie finds out about this, she shouts at Annalize and then stops working. Shortly afterward Nate's wife dies, and Annalise tries to comfort him, but he tells her that he does not want to know anything about her. Annalise and the boys find out that Helena Hapstall had a son, who could be a possible suspect in the Hapstall case, and shortly after they discover that there is the blood of him at the crime scene, practically freeing the brothers from all charges. Nate makes peace with Annalise, and even helps by modifying information from Philip's background, and shortly before having sex, Wes interrupts them with a new discovery of the Hapstall case: Catherine knew Philip, the product of incest between siblings Helena and Grant Hapstall. It is also discovered that there was a pistol in Catherine's office and she flees when Caleb and Michaela find her.

Night at the Hapstall Mansion[]

Annalise tries to fix the situation but everything gets worse when Nate explodes emotionally against Sinclair, Asher's father commits suicide, and consequently Asher ends up running over Emily Sinclair. Annalise devises a plan to falsify a crime scene disaster, where the story for the cops will be that Catherine murdered Sinclair and then shot Annalise. Everyone prepares the mansion to make it look like this and they clean up incriminating evidence against them, and Annalise tries to persuade the Keating 4 to shoot her. None of the Keating 4 wants to do it, so she resorts to her last option: she reveals to Wes that Rebecca has been dead all this time. Wes shoots Annalise in the stomach, and while Wes is pointing the gun at her head, she whispers, "Christophe." Annalise loses consciousness little by little and the ambulance takes her to the hospital, where she is treated and survives. ("What Did We Do?")

After a couple of weeks in the hospital, Annalise returns home and when medicated begins to hallucinate that a woman called Rose forces a baby into her arms, however, when she wakes she does not remember this. The trial of Catherine begins, in which Annalise cannot focus due to her wound. Annalise manages to convince Caleb that Catherine says that he shoots her, and she says she shot him but was drugged. Finally, they get their way again and Annalise goes home alone, despite the fact that Bonnie apologizes to her for telling her she wanted her to die. Nate cares about her and will talk to her about whether she wants to die. Annalise tells him no and asks him to leave. After the case and everything, at night Annalise arrives at her room and finds Wes in his bed next to an empty bottle of pills. Wes asks about how he knows his real name and knows his mother. Annalise refuses to respond and Wes gets annoyed and approaches her. Annalise yells at him to leave. Wes listens to her, and soon after, she stays home alone but starts to hear noises in the living room, so she goes downstairs and finds the baby again. One sees little by little that Annalise is holding the baby, but soon we see that it continues imagining and it is not holding anything really.

Annalise arrives at the court and virtually ignores her students as she enters the courtroom of her new client. Annalise tells Bonnie that she does not need the help of Keating 5 (without Wes), and then the judge arrives to finish the case, however, the victim's mother complicates the case and Bonnie puts the boys to work. Laurel discovers that Wes is in a mental institution trapped for a few hours by joking about suicide and reproaches Annalise for refusing to take him out. Caleb asks Annalise for help, and she rejects him. Then Laurel tells everyone and one by one they unite against Annalise and resign. Frank and Bonnie stay by her side and help her win the case. Frank talks to Nate and asks about Philip, but he still does not know anything, and then asks him to talk to Annalise because it's not right. Nate brings a dinner to Annalise and waits at her door, but Annalise is in Wes's apartment, where she is hiding while waiting for Wes to get home and find a packet of files on his mother's case. Nate leaves, and Annalise returns home to find her dinner with a note. Upon entering the house and starting to eat, Annalise receives the call from Connor, who tells him that Philip sent him a video of that night.

Annalise sees the video that Philip sent Connor with Bonnie and he tells him that Philip saw everything they did that night. After analyzing it Annalise tells her that she is not in the video, and asks what she wants her to do. Connor tells him they need help. Annalise tells him that they hurt her feelings and Connor defends himself saying that she made them shoot her. Annalise points out that only Laurel shot her and that the others ran as usual, but Connor tells him that he's came back to stop the bleeding and tells her that maybe he's the reason she's still alive, and then asks her to please help them. Annalise accepts and tells Bonnie to call the others except for Wes. Then Philip tries to extort them all. Annalise and Michaela go with Caleb and she tells him that it will help him find Philip as it is a common interest, but asks him for a $ 250,000 cash advance so no one knows they are working together. Annalise asks Caleb to talk to Catherine to find out if he knows anything else that he has not told them yet, and although he initially refuses, he decides to go and talk to his sister in prison, where Catherine tells him that Philip is the brother who is He understood her and told her not to believe him.

She later has a dinner with Nate; Nate is still worried about her, and Annalise is annoyed. Nate tells her that she will leave, and Annalize tells her that she is only worried about waiting for the moment when he wants to take revenge for what she did to him. Nate tells her that he will not betray her and that it is also difficult to find out what his relationship is like now. Annalise shows him the video of Philip to Nate and he advises him not to negotiate with him, and Annalise tells this to his students. While the countdown for the 36 hours ends. Annalise tells them that they could easily say that it was taken on a different night. Time is running out and nothing happens, so Annalize tells them to get their work done for once, but while they celebrate Philip sends another email to Connor. Everyone is scared again but when they open they see another video: this time from the previous night is a video about Annalise and Nate.

Bonnie asks him when that was and she replies to him the night before, but then Laurel arrives furious and demands to talk to Annalise alone. Annalise takes her to his office, and Laurel asks if she knew all this time, as she pulls out the sheet from Ohio. Annalise asks him what he's talking about until he reads the sheet and says Christophe, his 12-year-old son, is a potential suspect in his mother's death. Annalise tells Laurel that it was not him and that she has no right to ask any of that, and that if Wes wants to know something he should ask himself the question. In class, Annalise says that not a day goes by without them lying to their clients, but they does it because their job as lawyers is to defend their clients from everything and/or all. At the mansion, everyone discusses what to do about Philip and the video I send about Annalise and Nate, while Annalise thinks and Bonnie tells them to calm down, but soon they receive another email from Philip with a video of that same morning with Caleb At the Hapstall Mansion.

After thinking about all this, Annalise tells them to give the computer with the videos, and although Connor initially opposes Annalize says she will not continue to risk their lives. Annalise goes with the computer to the court and enters the DA's office. There he accepts a treatment of immunity, but in fact, sends the police to register the house of Annalise. Annalise discovers it when Nate informs him and she does a trick next to its associates and manages to turn the play to him, a reason why Denver ends up accepting the deal. That night Annalise sleeps at Nate's house, but Wes enters the Keating Mansion and finds the police report Laurel brought. The following morning, Annalise and Prosecutor Denver watch the videos Philip sent them about the night Emily Sinclair was murdered, and although the physicist suspects that her students were running from the scene of the crime, Annalise argues that Video has no date and insurance was some other night, but the FTC is still hesitating. Annalise mocks him and tells him that he has a lot of imagination. When Annalise arrives, she tells her students to go after all of them so they must keep quiet.

Laurel continues to urge Annalise to look for Wes, and this makes Annalise think; Annalise goes to Wes's apartment and walks in when he sees a shadow, Annalise talks to him and tells him they have to talk but eventually gets a call from Eve in which he tells her that Wes is with her in New York and Annalise asks her to call 911 and runs off, but Philip attacks her before leaving. Annalise manages to escape, and Eve arrives at the Commissary with Wes to take her home. In her room Annalize talks to Eve about her date, Eve invites her to New York but she rejects her again. Then she discovers that Caleb is missing. Eve argues with Nate and then decides to leave, but Wes asks for answers about her mother, to which Annalise responds by saying that this matter is between them two. Frank brings a bottle of vodka to Annalise in her office and she is left alone to drink. Later Nate calls her to see how she is, and shortly afterward she asks him why Wes visits her ex-girlfriend, and she deflects the subject and thanks her for worrying about her.

Bonnie tells Annalise to stop drinking because they have everyone in the room and asks about Wes. Annalise gets upset and runs all of his house except for Wes, and makes him enter her office. There he gives her a glass of vodka and tells him that his mother's death was not her fault, if not her because I press her too hard. She also tells him that she was trying to protect him, and when Wes asks her that she reveals that her father is Wallace Mahoney. Annalise cries in her bed as she watches the photograph taken with Sam and her baby in the hospital. Meanwhile, a drunken Laurel arrives at the Keating mansion and demands answers to Annalise about what I talk about Wes, and accidentally reveals that Frank killed Lila. Annalise packs clothes and goes with her mother, who receives it saying "There is my baby". Annalise returns to her mother's house and her sister wakes her up, then Ophelia interrupts them while they speak to tell her to dress because I invite her family. Annalise goes down to the party and feels uncomfortable, but then notes that his brother is wearing one of Sam's outfits. At lunch, he finds that his mother and father are seeing each other again. Annalise reproaches that to his mother. Shortly after Nate arrives to look for it and tells him that they have a warrant against her and must return, but Ophelia and Celestine invite him to stay.

At the dinner, Annalise discusses with her parents and Ophelia reproaches her for never having children, but then Annalise rises and starts dancing with his family and Nate. Later Annalise, after saying goodbye to Nate, reveals to her mother that if she had a baby but he died. Ophelia can not sleep and raises Annalise to take her to the patio and dig a hole. Ophelia gives Annalise a leaf and tells her that she needs to say goodbye to her son so she can move on. Annalise writes a note to her son and buries her, then cries in her mother's lap. The next morning, the father of Annalise finds his phone and takes it to his daughter, but she asks him to leave his mother alone. Annalise then turn on your phone and listen to the messages left by the Keating 5 and Denver, so you decide it's time to return to Philadelphia. At the police station, she tells Denver that Caleb is the real Hapstall killer and he did everything to blame Philip. Denver stops Philip and the case closes. At night, when Annalise arrives at the mansion, Keating meets Bonnie and she defends Frank, but she tells him that after everything that has happened he still relies on men; Annalize tells Bonnie that Frank has to go.

Season 3[]

Wallace Mahoney was shot outside his office. Wes Gibbins was about to introduce himself to his father when Wallace was shot in the head. Annalise later picked Wes up from the station after he was questioned by the police. In the car, Wes tells her that he thinks that Frank Delfino played him as Frank got him to go to meet his father in the first place and he wasn't there when he looked after Wallace was shot, suggesting to him that Frank was the one who killed him. The two then go to the woods where Annalise screams into the night to remove some of her built up anger. Wes does the same. ("We're Good People Now")

After the end of the school year, in May, she is visited by Laurel Castillo who tells her that she is leaving for the summer to spend time with her mother in Mexico. Annalise asks her whether she has had any contact with Frank Delfino to which Laurel tells her she hasn't. The following month, Annalise visits Connor Walsh who was sunbathing on the rooftop with his feet in a paddling pool. She joins him and Connor informs her that Oliver Hampton will ask her for a job which he tells her to refuse him. She gives him her word. The following month, Asher Millstone comes to the Keating House while Annalise and Nate Lahey are having a BBQ. He asks her for a loan to pay for his tuition and rent since his mother cut him off after his father's suicide. She laughs at him and tells him to get a job like everyone else. She later talked the police down from charging Michaela Pratt with drunk driving the following month. Michaela wasn't very appreciative and blamed Annalise for everything that had happened to her. Regardless, Annalise gives her a ride home. That same month, she was called in by the new president of Middleton University, Soraya Hargrove. Soraya explained that she has been replaced on her Introduction to Criminal Law class due to her students receiving low grades. Annalise then asks for her own pro-bono legal clinic for her students to act as lawyers and have their own clients. ("We're Good People Now")

It's September and Annalise walks into her new law clinic class and while she is introducing the class, she notices the students glaring at something behind her: a poster of her with 'Killer' inscribed across it. She dismisses it and introduces her first client: Karim Assaf - a refugee facing deportation after pleading guilty to a possession charge. She has her students talk with Karim and Laurel Castillo comes back with evidence that Karim pleaded guilty to protect his daughter who was the real owner of the drugs. At the Keating House, Annalise goes straight to her room where she texts the man who she had find Frank Delfino. He replies, telling her that he hadn't found him yet. After class, Oliver Hampton manages to get an interview out of Annalise. He impresses her by telling her that he had hacked into Stanford University's system to delete Connor Walsh's acceptance email. Later that night, Nate Lahey and Annalise are giving each other massages. In court, Wes Gibbins introduces Karim to the court being as she chose him as first chair. Michaela Pratt soon interrupts and tells her that she had a damning recording of Karim's former public defender on his case. She then takes this recording to the District Attorney's Office to Brad Bloomfield where she gets him to reduce Karim's charge to a misdemeanor. The judge, however, is still not satisfied as Karim still pleaded guilty under oath and refuses to stay Karim's deportation. At home, Bonnie Winterbottom shows her an article by the university about the 'Killer' fliers. She later calls the Butch Man who has found Frank but he is soon cut off and Frank kills him. Annalise quickly puts the phone down and Nate enters her room. ("We're Good People Now")

Annalise is in bed with Nate kissing. Nate goes into the shower when Annalise gets a call from the Butch Man. It's Frank and he tells her that he had to kill the man. She hangs up and then gets a call from President Hargrove's office, asking her to come in. After talking with her, she comes out and bumps into Wes and asks him to move into her house as she is lonely; he refuses. In the clinic later, Annalise introduces their next client, Irene Crowley who personally picks Connor Walsh to be first chair. At Nate's Apartment, she asks him to help her find Frank as she is scared that he will come back and do something. He agrees to help. At her house the following day, Bonnie shows her Laurel's phone logs which show her calling Frank nearly every day. Annalise is angry that she would lie to her after everything that she had done for them. At the parole hearing, Connor gets angry with the panel and Annalise calls for a break and gets a call from Nate and the two meet in the car about an update regarding Frank. Back inside, Irene gives her account of the abuse she suffered. In a break, Annalise catches Irene's husband's sister in the bathroom and suggests to her that she not show up to the hearing. Back inside, the sister doesn't and Irene's parole is granted. Annalise is then called back into the university where they try and suspend her due to the flyers escalating. She refuses to go without a fight. Back at her house, she is on the phone to Nate who tells her that Frank could be anywhere. He tells her that he'll stay with her tonight to keep her safe. In the meantime, Wes shows up with dinner. ("There Are Worse Things Than Murder")

Nate makes Annalise a smoothie one morning. She forces herself to drink it however, once she gets to the university she throws it away. President Hargrove catches her on her way to class with the hope of burying the hatchet. In class, Annalise introduces the students to their next client - who failed to call the ambulance on a girl at a party who clearly needed one. As Michaela is the only student who is up for the task, Annalise makes her first chair. On the way out of the court, Annalise pulls Wes aside and informs him that Laurel has gone to see her father. Once back home, Bonnie encourages Annalise to go to the DA to get Toby a plea deal. Once there, Renee refuses to even contemplate offering her client a deal, not because of the client, but because of Annalise personally. Later, Annalise and Bonnie catch Toby on his way out and he tells them that he is being blackmailed by his former lawyer after he told him that he killed someone. They then take him back to the house where they get him to open up. After, Bonnie and Annalise have a drink while discussing their options. Bonnie thinks that they should give an anonymous tip to the DA but Annalise talks her out of it. While in bed with Nate, the two come up with the idea to pin the murder on someone else. In court the following day, Annalise slyly slips in the girl's murder. After, Renee offers Toby a plea deal which Annalise forces him to take after slapping him around the face. Back in her office, Laurel arrives back home and lies to Bonnie and Annalise. She tells them that her father didn't give her Frank's location when he did. ("Always Bet Black")

Annalise and Eve are in a bar drinking and 2 male lawyers approach them. Later she gets home and is somewhat tipsy so Nate has to help her to bed. The next morning she passes off the case to Asher to handle. Things come to a halt in the courtroom when she is informed that her law license has been suspended due to "gross misconduct." A video of Annalise slapping her previous client across the face was leaked, which is what led to her license suspension. Later, Annalise reveals to Eve she used Sam's life insurance money to hire a hitman to find Frank because she wants to make him pay for indirectly killing her baby. After yelling at the president of the university, Annalise also finds out that her tenure has been nullified. When she goes home she gets in a fight with Nate, calling him a "little bench" and yelling at him to hit her. At her preliminary disciplinary hearing, she claims that she's become an alcoholic to deal with Sam's death, the shooting, and the flyers, but she will enter treatment if it gets her her license back. Afterward, she tells Eve and they kiss but Eve pulls away and tells her that she has a girlfriend who wants her to move to San Francisco. Annalise urges Eve to do it and they embrace. Not long after, Bonnie tells Annalise that her pedophile father was dead and that she had been listed as his next-of-kin. ("Don't Tell Annalise")

Annalise calls Bonnie asking her how she's doing since her father's death. She tells her that she's fine, that she is with her sister. Bonnie reminds Annalise to go to an AA meeting. Annalise later attends one, though she arrives late. Jonathan asks Annalise to introduce herself. When she does, she notices Soraya is also there. At the end of the meeting, Soraya goes over to Annalise and Annalise threatens to sue her though Soraya isn't worried. Sticking with the program, Annalise removes all the alcohol from her house, while reminiscing with some old memories which ultimately results in her giving in to her urges and drinks. It's now nighttime and Annalise can barely walk. She is dancing to music when she leaves Nate a drunk voicemail. Wes knocks at the door and is surprised to see her drinking again. Inevitably, Annalise throws up in her toilet and gets sick all in her hair. She tells Wes to leave her as she doesn't want him to see her in that state. Wes tells her that he's not going anywhere and cleans her up and helps her to bed. She is awoken by the sound of knocking the next morning. Michaela and the others show Annalise Simon's laptop containing a copy of the flyer which has been circulating the university. She then confronts him in his apartment. Annalise then visits Soraya in her office and hands her a copy of her lawsuit. Soraya stands down and asks her what she wants. Annalise wants a truce and her job back which Soraya agrees to. When she arrives back home, Wes and Laurel are waiting and tell her that Bonnie is with Bonnie in Coalport. Bonnie then arrives. ("It's About Frank")

Bonnie tries to explain herself. Bonnie reveals a recording she secretly made of Frank confessing to Wallace Mahoney's murder. Laurel gets a call from Meggy telling her that the NYPD are at Wes' Apartment. Wes wants to talk to the police but Annalise tells him not to. The next morning, Ellen Freeman gives Annalize her reinstatement contract. Annalise then calls Bonnie to tell her. At the clinic, Annalise introduces their next client, Daniela Alvodar accused of aggravated assault charges. Soraya arrives just as Annalise finishes and she informs her about detectives calling her office from New York about Wes. That night, Bonnie tells Annalise that she got Wes a lawyer. In court the next day, Annalise takes on ADA Renee Atwood. In the bathroom after, Michaela tells Annalise that Dani has been lying to them. While walking in the parking lot, Nate tells her to get into his patrol car and comes clean about sleeping with Renee. After arriving home, Wes is still there and questions her about Frank, Annalise forgets herself and tells him that he indirectly killed her son in a car accident. The following day, Bonnie is in and Annalise tells her to get Wes that lawyer and help her in court. In court, Annalise calls Dani to the stand where she lies on the stand and tells the story. Bonnie later arrives and hands Annalise evidence that Dani is lying and informs the judge. As a result, the ADA offers Dani a plea deal where she pleads guilty to a misdemeanor and go to a rehab facility. Later, Annalise arrives home and Wes' lawyer is there. Wes isn't home which causes Annalise to panic thinking that he's turned himself in. Though a news report suggests that Wallace's son, Charles has been arrested for his father's murder. ("Is Someone Really Dead?")

At the university, Wes tells Annalise that he lied to the police after going there with his attorney. At court, Edith Duvall accuses her children of poisoning her over a news video. The students give the children, Jared, Karen and Nelson a practice deposition. After, Annalise tells her students to find a new suspect and offers the student who provides a viable suspect an 'A' in their midterm. That night, Annalise has cravings for alcohol so Bonnie tells her to go to an AA meeting. Once there Soraya shares her story about her addiction. Annalise is hit on by Hank afterward. In the deposition, Jared loses it when his mother tells him that his sex life is a joke. That night, a news report reveals that Charles Mahoney has an alibi. With everyone around at the house, Wes catches her out on another lie. She allows them all to take turns having a goe at her for what she's put them through. After, Annalise watches the video of Edith again and realizes that she has poisoned herself. She calls Laurel and tells her that she will be leading the deposition against Edith. The two of them manage to get her to confess and Annalise gives Laurel an 'A' for helping her in her midterms. She later runs into Soraya outside the university and gives her a number for a family attorney. Soraya thanks her. Back home, Wes is waiting for her. he apologizes for lying to the police. Wes worries that it isn't over. ("Call It Mother's Intuition")

Fire at the Keating House[]

Annalise arrives back to her house to find it ablaze. She barges past the police and demands to know what happened. She notices them wheel a body out of the house and she goes sees who the victim is. She screams and cries in despair. Following, Annalise is questioned by the police asking her for her alibi to which she tells them that she was at the clinic. Oliver later arrives at the scene and asks her who the body is but she refuses to confirm that there was one and gives him a phone and asks him to wipe it while giving him a hug. Annalise is then arrested by the two detectives she spoke to earlier. At the station, Annalise is being processed. The officer asks where her cellphone is as she can't find it. She then has her mugshot taken. Annalise then calls Bonnie and urges her to assist Oliver in erasing her phone at the scene. After Bonnie returns to Annalise in her cell and informs her that there was another body found in the house and that they are alive. ("We're Good People Now", "There Are Worse Things Than Murder", "Always Bet Black", "Don't Tell Annalise")

In a series of flash forwards it is shown that Annalise's house has burnt down and that someone has been found dead inside it. As the season progresses it is revealed that it was Wes that was found inside the house dead. This is likely to cause tremendous pain in Annalise's life since she had done so much to protect him only for her to lose him. ("Who's Dead?")

This eventually lands Annalise in prison where she finds it hard to adapt to prison life. She shares a cell with Jasmine Bromelle and Claudia Gelvin the latter of whom explains to her the realities of prison life. We're Bad People.

Season 4[]

401AnnaliseOphelia
Annalise singing to her mother. ("I'm Going Away")

Annalise was on a flight to Memphis when a man named Desmond began flirting with her. At her parents' home, she sat down at the table to talk with the family. Annalise and Celestine has been taking and she said she wanted to use her insurance money from the fire to put her mom in a nursing home, but her mother was furious with the idea. Bonnie called to reveal Hannah (Sam's sister) was contesting Annalise's ownership of the house and a date for the hearing with Bar was put through. To avoid drinking but still blow off steam, Annalise met up with Desmond for a hookup. She got cold feet, however, and bailed. During the night, her mom had a dementia episode, after which she agreed to visit the facility. Annalise’s father wanted to care for her herself, and they fought over who was to blame for her mom’s condition. Celestine assured her that it wasn’t her fault, and she confessed that the expected insurance payout wasn’t coming through. She further admitted she may be disbarred for her alcohol issues. “I’d be drinking, too, if I had your life,” her sister admitted. Annalise asked her mom point-blank what she wants to do, and the matriarch replied, “I’m going away. You know it, I know it. My mind’s going.” Noting her daughter’s past losses, she said she wanted to “protect you from losing any more.” But since the dementia can’t be stopped, she said they need to “prepare,” prompting Annalise to break down. “Don’t worry, I’ll stay as long as I can,” her mother said. Before leaving, Annalise begged her dad to “keep her safe,” at which pointed he finally apologized for the sexual assault she suffered at the hands of his brother. ("I'm Going Away")

401DinnerTable
The group waiting for Laurel. ("I'm Going Away")

One week later, at the legal hearing to see whether Annalise would be able to continue practicing law, Annalise confirmed she was drinking while already on probation with the Bar and said Wes' death was the result of her decision to drink. But she promised she’s sober and would remain so, and pleaded for “mercy” and “one more chance.” The bar revealed that she could keep her license but she would have to attend therapy meetings as a result. Later, Annalise invited the Keating 4 and Bonnie to a dinner. Laurel was later late to the dinner, where envelopes awaited each person. Annalise said the letters couldn’t be opened until after dinner. She revealed she won the hearing, and Laurel said she couldn’t drink to celebrate because she was having the baby and is due in five months. Annalise then said the envelopes held recommendation letters, as she was cutting them from her team. “We’ve been given a second chance. We don’t need each other anymore. So it’s time to go our separate ways,” she told them, pointing out Wes’ absence. “I ruined him, but I’m not going to ruin all of you.” When an upset Laurel left, Michaela blasted Annalise for her unilateral decision and then stormed off, too, saying, “Have a terrible rest of your life.” Asher followed, saying, “Maybe next time, don’t invite people to a fancy dinner to dump them.” Connor was the least bothered and actually thanked Annalise. “They’ll understand eventually that this is good for them,” Bonnie said, just as Annalise handed her her own envelope and walked out. She later set up residence in a fully-furnished one-bedroom suite at the Easton Hotel as that was the cheapest place that she could afford. Annalise then attended a mandatory therapy meeting with Dr. Isaac Roa at his office. ("I'm Going Away")

402IsaacAnnaliseTalk
Annalise at her therapy session with Isaac Roa. ("I'm Not Her")

At her therapy session, she shared that she was sober and working, as she took on a former cellmate, Jasmine, as her new client, free of charge. A convicted prostitute and drug addict, she was behind bars for felony gun possession. In court, Annalise was shocked to see that Bonnie was now working for the DA’s office. Nate actually thought Bonnie was only working there to help Annalise, which they both denied. The dash cam footage from Jasmine’s arrest showed she actually solicited the arresting officer and also could’ve been booked for battery. Confronted with the damaging video, she rejected Annalise’s attempts to help. Meanwhile, the psychologist thought Annalise was only talking to him about the case to avoid discussing her personal issues. “You’re hiding,” he angrily told her. Annalise realized Jasmine was a sex trafficking victim, forced into it at 13, and needed her sealed juvenile record to prove it. She asked Bonnie for help and was shut down, however, Frank came to her aid of which she disliked. At the trial, she questioned why Jasmine wasn’t treated as a victim when she was taken into custody as a teen and confronted the now-retired judge who worked on Jasmine's case on why, as a black girl, she was treated differently than white girls in the same situation. Her argument was that that started a lifelong pattern that never should’ve been, and demanded all her subsequent convictions be vacated. The presiding judge apologized on behalf of the wrong previously done to her and said he would seal all her prior convictions so she could move forward without a criminal history. Annalise even gave her money for a fresh start. At her session with Isaac, Isaac thought Annalise only connected with Jasmine because of a common history with sexual abuse, an observation she rejected. “I’m not her,” she insisted, even saying that she expects Jasmine to end up back in jail. Isaac said people change, as he used to be a heroin addict. “I wish you hadn’t told me that,” Annalise responded. ("I'm Not Her")

403AnnaliseJasmine
Annalise finding out that Jasmine overdosed. ("It's for the Greater Good")

Annalise offered to help the understaffed Public Defender’s Office. Her assigned case was Ben Carter, convicted of killing his fiancée. The former gang member, who was covered in tattoos, told Annalise she jumped to her death after a fight over their daughter, who wasn’t actually his. Annalise kept the paternity secret but argued in court that she was suffering from postpartum depression. Laurel then ran into Annalise in the bathroom during recess and sarcastically told her “everything’s great.” Laurel then revealed she’s having a boy. After recess, Nate was called to testify, revealing a newly-recovered voicemail in which Ben’s fiancée begged him to come back to her. Nate and Bonnie later hired Oliver to hack Annalise’s phone and found a deleted voicemail note from her private session with Ben. That message revealed to Nate and the prosecution that Ben wasn’t the daughter’s father. After the PD threatened to take her off the case, Annalise angrily confronted Bonnie and Nate, who had to separate the two women from coming to blows. Annalise was asked to identify a body at the morgue. It was Jasmine, who seemingly died of a drug overdose. Instead of going to the bar, she went to Isaac for an emergency therapy session at his office. He suggested she withdraw from Ben’s case, calling it too much to handle on top of the death. Arriving home, Annalise found a DVD presuming that it was from Frank. Frank then got a call from her, asking about it. He denied sending it, and the footage showed Ben’s fiancée jumping to her death. Frank uncovered that a guy who works at a bar delivered the tape. Turns out, he was “screwing” the head public defender, who Annalise called in court as a “hostile witness.” She questioned why this evidence was withheld during Ben’s first trial and played the footage. The woman claimed she only learned of it during the appeal and was too overworked during the prior trial to sift through all the evidence. After winning the trial, “It was for the greater good,” Annalise told Isaac during another meeting of her decision to publicly expose the PD. She ranted about the problems with the justice system and said she wanted to file a class-action suit on behalf of other possible victims of ineffective counsel. ("It's for the Greater Good")

404Annalise&Crew
Annalise, Soraya and Tegan. ("Was She Ever Good at Her Job?")

In her apartment, Annalise is working on her class action lawsuit. Realising that to pull off her class-action lawsuit she needs cash. So she goes to Middleton University's President, Soraya Hargrove in order for her to hire her as her attorney. Soraya hires her as her co-council on the case. Later at Caplan & Gold, Annalise, Soraya, Tegan and her intern, Michaela Pratt meet with Soraya's ex-husband Raul and his lawyer. Raul's lawyer hands Tegan an affidavit and a flash drive containing videos of Soraya throwing up in her children's bathroom. After the meeting, Soraya explains the video. The two lawyers throw around different ideas. Soraya pipes up and decides that she wants to go after her ex-husband. After Annalise drafts the first section of the counter-suit and goes to Tegan for her help, she refuses. While waiting for she the elevator, Michaela comes up to her and gives them Raul's lawyer's email address. Later, Annalise emails the file to the wrong person accidentally before her appointment with Isaac at his office. Annalise enters the appointment but throughout the appointment, Michaela repeatedly calls her. Annalise then races over to Caplan & Gold and Michaela tells her that she emailed the wrong person. Annalise walks into the meeting room where Soraya is on the phone with a member of the Middleton board. Once Tegan leaves Annalise and Soraya alone, Annalise reassures her that she will fix her mistake. While on the elevator up to her apartment, she phones the member of the board and leaves a voicemail. Once on the right floor, Frank is there, offering his suitcase full of money which she refuses as it came from the murder of her son. In the morning, Annalise phones the member of the board again and leaves another message, this time, blackmailing him. She then gets an email from Isaac with his report on her. Annalise then races to Caplan & Gold where she tells them the idea that they get the judge to give them Raul's therapy notes. Tegan then goes to the judge and gets the notes and they find something that will win them the case. They use the information in order to get the opposing side to agree to joint custody. After, Tegan offers Annalise a job if she wants it. Michaela follows her to the elevator ordering her not to work there. Annalise arrives at the D.A.'s office and gives the clerk a check for all the paperwork, she turns around and Nate offers her a hand. Annalise reveals she is doing this for Wes and everyone who got screwed by the system. ("Was She Ever Good at Her Job?")

Annalise met with imprisoned people she thought were screwed over by the public defender’s office. She got 16 of the required 40 to sign on to her class action suit. Nate told Annalise that Bonnie was “on your tail.” He was willing to give her a client recommendation if she made her case official instead of sneaking around but denied to Bonnie that he uncovered anything. Annalise later went to the former cellmate she clashed with, Claudia, to get her and her jailed friends to join the suit, too. With her help, she reached the 40-person threshold. Later, Connor drunkenly went to visit Annalise at the hotel, blaming her for his issues. “We did so many bad things,” he cried, adding, “I’m not like you. I can’t just move on.” She said he was stronger than he thought because he came to her instead of harming himself. As Annalise celebrated getting 40 clients, others started dropping out, saying the “D.A. lady” offered them better deals. Indeed, Bonnie had gone to the prisoners, badmouthing Annalise and promising more lenient punishments. The two women ended up coming face to face, with Annalise saying she was “trying to do something good.” Bonnie said Annalise only helps herself and that’s the only reason she helped her years ago. “We’re not the same... You made me into you,” Bonnie shot back, ranting about now being “thrown out like just another intern.” Annalise said she was never “nothing” or “trash” to her, but had now majorly screwed up. Talking to Connor again at her apartment, Annalise asked him to help her with the lawsuit. ("I Love Her")

406AnnaliseTalksToPublic

Annalise vented about Bonnie in a therapy session with Isaac. He rejected his own therapist’s suggestion and tells her what happened with “Julie”. Isaac was mostly triggered by the fact that Annalise had lost a baby, and gave her a homework assignment: Write a letter to Sam. Later, Annalise and Connor tried to keep Claudia as a client, even as the city was threatening to seize her family’s home unless she dropped out of the class action lawsuit. She saw it as an “intimidation tactic” from the state, but was warned by the judge that she might not be the best person for a case with such “public scrutiny.” Annalise confronted Denver and his staff in the D.A’s office, appealing to their conscience. Annalise didn’t write the letter, and instead gave Isaac her only photo of the baby, crying about the loss and losing the person she was before then. She became enraged when Isaac interrupted, confessing that she attempted suicide in the aftermath and was saved by Bonnie. He insisted she was “strong,” even as she said she wanted a drink. Annalise’s failed letter-writing inspired her and Connor to go public with the D.A.’s secret campaign against the prisoners who were signed on her to suit. They held a press conference with Claudia’s son, publicly pleading for an injunction against the D.A.’s office. The judge again warned her that she’d face more push-back as the suit goes on, but Annalise asked him, “Which side of justice do you want to be on?” And so, he signed the injunction. While unlocking her door to her apartment, she was greeted by Jacqueline Roa. ("Stay Strong, Mama")

Jacqueline, Isaac's ex-wife, told Annalise that they lost their daughter to suicide a few years ago and she suspected he was “using” again because her “situation” was “triggering” him. As an addiction specialist herself, she said she could be her new counselor and help them both. However, they weren't really going to have sessions together, but simply tell the Disciplinary Board they were. Over his objections, Annalise later told Isaac they couldn’t continue their sessions. Annalise had a court hearing to get her lawsuit, with more than 70 plaintiffs, certified. The state attorney general tried to fight it by bringing up Annalise’s sobriety issues, including a recent photo of her holding a bottle of alcohol. Connor suggested she take the stand, but Annalise wasn’t game. Instead, she went to D.A. Denver, arguing that they have a common enemy in the attorney general and should team up to take him down. Annalise later called a secretary in the D.A.’s office to the stand, and she testified that she placed the liquor bottle on Annalise’s car and took the photo to make Annalise look bad. Later with Jacquline, she encouraged Annalise to continue therapy with someone else but refused to reveal more of Isaac’s issues. At home afterward, Annalise found a bottle of vodka left in her kitchen, leading her to go to stay with Nate, who suspected the A.G. was behind it. He shamed her for having the secretary lie on the stand and said “playing dirty” was taking a “toll” on her. Both, it seemed, still had feelings for the other. The next day, Isaac showed up at court after being subpoenaed by the A.G. On the stand, he tried to get Isaac to say she wasn’t mentally competent to handle the lawsuit, as it could be a risk factor for her alcoholism. As he flashed back to some of their sessions, he lied, saying he wasn’t concerned about her sobriety. Later, Annalise confronted Isaac over his perjury, but he denied it, prompting her to ask if he was using heroin. She cried that she was still hurting people and demanded to know the truth: “Am I triggering you?” He insisted she wasn’t and wondered if Bonnie suggested that. “It’s not Bonnie. It’s your ex-wife,” she confessed. ("Nobody Roots for Goliath")

Party at Caplan & Gold[]

On her way home, Annalise found Bonnie at her door where Bonnie apologized for her stunt with Isaac. Annalise told Bonnie, "I can’t keep forgiving you for all the sick things you do." Bonnie confessed her love and said Annalise would "need her," but Annalise demanded she leave or she’d call the police. The following day, Annalise then went to Isaac, who apologized for Jacqueline's meddling and said he was willing to be reported. She said she wouldn’t do that because "I want to keep seeing you." He, however, said he couldn’t be her therapist because she knows too much about him. She, in turn, said their similar problems are why he needs to "help" her. That night, Annalise got a call from Connor where he explained everything that the Keating 4 was involved in. Connor explained that Laurel's father had Wes killed and that they were at the Caplan & Gold party to get proof to bring Laurel's father down. Annalise called Frank, ripping him for letting Laurel go ahead with their scheme. When she arrived home, she didn’t notice a drop of blood outside the elevator but then heard a woman crying out from the elevator. Annalise pries open the elevator doors and finds Laurel bleeding out on the floor. Looking closer, Annalise saw that a newly born baby was lying between Laural's legs and called 911. 911 operator guided Annalise as she got the baby out and cut the umbilical cord, but the baby, born two months early, wasn’t breathing, so she had to do CPR, crying, “Live, live, live." After a while, the baby cried. ("Live. Live. Live.")

Season 5[]

Season 6[]

Annalise frantically looks around, looking for Laurel when her phone rings. It's Tegan and she tells her that Emmett is dead, that she found him on the floor of his office, probably poisoned. Annalise doesn't take the news well which forces her to a bar where she has shot after shot of vodka before turning to drugs after being offered then by a younger guy. She later wakes up in the hospital where Bonnie greets her. Annalise realizes that she has a problem and insists that she go to rehab. ("Say Goodbye")

Continuing, the Flashforward also reveals the funeral of Annalise where many people are gathered to say goodbye, leaving behind the mystery of how she had died. ("Stay") In the final episode it is finally revealed that Annalise died a natural death after achieving great things, the scene is from the future whereupon Annalise's death everyone is gathered including Laueral who's son looks just like Wes and was mentored by Annalise.

Relationships[]

  • Eve Rothlo: Eve and Annalise fell in love at Harvard Law School and started a relationship. Annalise, however, did not want to live a life as a lesbian, and began to pursue Sam Keating in order to force a heteronormative lifestyle. Over 20 years later, Annalise contacted Eve for her to be Nate's lawyer during his trial for the murder of Sam. Over the years, Eve and Annalise have sex on multiple occasions and confessed that they still loved each other; Frank later mentioned that Eve was listed in his contacts as "The One" because he assumed that she and Annalise were "endgame".Eve tried to convince Annalise to move with her in New York but Annalise wouldn't leave her "family". When Eve later returned to Philadelphia, she informed Annalise that she had found love with someone else (a woman named Vanessa), and that her new lover was pregnant after five tries at in-vitro fertilization. Annalise is deeply hurt by the news, as Eve had long said that she did not want to raise children, but ultimately gives Eve her blessing to move on.  Eve gives the eulogy at Annalise's funeral, stating that she loved Annalise more than she'd ever loved anybody.
  • Solomon Vick: . According to Annalise, she dated Solomon while she was an undergraduate volunteering at a law clinic. Annalise told Michaela that she did not know Solomon and the man was "a stranger to me." This turns out to be untue - Solomon and Annalise were romantically involved, much to Michaela's disgust. Solomon later accuses Annalise of having "quit us". He tells Michaela that he slept with her mother to get his mind off Annalise. In the end, he helps the FBI capture Annalise and bring her back to the United States to save his daughter from prison.
  • Sam Keating: Annalise and Sam originally met while Sam was still married to his first wife and while Annalise was dating Eve Rothlo. They met while he was her therapist. After the two officially get together, they move into the Keating House and try to have kids, though Annalise has continuous miscarriages which put a strain on their relationship. Though the final time that she became pregnant, the baby was healthy, however, Annalise was in an accident which caused the baby to be born premature and it was stillborn. This killed her marriage with Sam and Annalise even attempted to kill herself of which Sam never found out about. Over the years, the two continue to drift apart until both sides of the marriage begin to have affairs, though both broke them off for various reasons. One night, the two were arguing and Sam got violent with Annalise. He was later killed and Annalise helped cover up his murder. Even after what happened before he died, Annalise still claimed that she loved him.
  • Nate Lahey: Though their relationship initially started out as an affair on both sides, Nate broke it off as he felt that Annalise was using him, which was partly true.  Annalise went on to implicate Nate in Sam's murder, knowing that he was innocent but with plans to have him found not guilty with help from her ex-lover, Eve Rothlo. Over time and after the charges were dropped, Nate and Annalise's rekindled their relationship. However, their relationship didn't last long and the two separated, with Nate growing to deeply resent Annalise over time. By the end of the series, the two have reached a fragile peace, but both their friendship and their love for each other has died entirely.
  • Isaac Roa: Though her therapist, the two begin having feelings for one another, feelings that got in the way of Isaac properly doing his job as her therapist. His liking for her sparked something inside of him that triggered him to relapse. Though the two never actually got together, the two admitted their liking of one another, however, after Isaac's relapse, he admitted that he didn't want to see her again.
  • Tegan Price: First an adversary and later a close friend, Tegan developed feelings for Annalise during their years at Caplan and Gold. When she finally confessed her feelings for Annalise, Annalise told Tegan that the woman she deserved to be with was "out there", but that it wasn't her. In the series finale, it is implied that Annalise eventually had a relationship with Tegan after her trial. Tegan is the only one of Annalise's partners acknowledged at her funeral, where a picture of the two women is displayed on Annalise's funeral board. According to the creator of the show during an interview with EW, the ending is open to interpretation. This includes whether Annalise ended up with Tegan or not.

Murders Committed[]

  • Rose Edmond (Indirectly caused): Annalise pressured Rose into testifying as the witness for the Mahoney Case and told her that if she didn't, Wallace Mahoney would hurt her son, Christophe Edmond, believing that Wallace was Christophe's father. This lead to Rose stabbing herself in the neck with a knife resulting in major blood loss.

Trivia[]

  • In an original version of the "Pilot" script, her name was Annalise DeWitt.
  • On the ABC website, Annalise is described as "everything you hope your Criminal Law professor will be – brilliant, passionate, creative and charismatic. She's also everything you don't expect – sexy, glamorous, unpredictable and dangerous. As fearless in the courtroom as she is in the classroom, Annalise is a defense attorney who represents the most hardened criminals – people who've committed everything from fraud to arson to murder. Annalise seems like she has it all – a successful career and a loving husband, Sam – but soon she will be forced to confront secrets about her life she never saw coming."[5]
  • She went to Harvard Law School with Eve Rothlo.[6]
  • Her character has been mentioned in the show called Scream Queens.
  • She is from Memphis, Tennessee. ("Anna Mae")
  • Annalise also had a strong son like relationship with Wes Gibbins.
  • She owns many wigs. She is rarely seen without wearing one of her wigs until the second half of the sixth season,.
    • Saying this, it was shown that Annalise grew her hair out as she cut it off when she was in prison half way through season 3. She then grew it out again towards the end of season 3. However, after season 3 and before season 4, she must have cut her hair off again and restarted wearing wigs as her short hair is briefly shown when she is writing the Keating 4 their letters.
  • Viola Davis says she has "created a past" for Annalise that helps her keep track of her character with a plan's motivations. "I don't [always] have the benefit of seeing the script in advance but I do feel that there are certain characters Annalise feels that she has a pure relationship with — Nate and Wes — and those characters are kind of sacred."[7]
  • Viola Davis helped create the character of Annalise and formulate the character's backstory.[8]
  • Annalise was initially shown to be pee shy as shown by her reluctance to use the toilet in front of her cellmates until she ultimately had to give in and do as shown in the episode We're Bad People. By the time of It's for the Greater Good she is seemingly able to go with her parole officer still in the stall with her albeit turned around as her cellmate offered to do.
  • In "Lahey v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania", it is stated that Annalise was born in 1967. In "Stay Strong, Mama", she is stated to be 50 by Isaac Roa, however, due to the timeline, this would place her as being 49 not 50 suggesting that could have Isaac rounded up or that it is a continuity error.
  • Annalise's sexuality served as a topic of discussion and debate for the majority of the show's initial run. During the 2017 TCA summer press tour, creator Peter Nowalk stated that, even though it was never said within the show, he believed the character to be pansexual.[9] It wasn't until the series' penultimate episode that Annalise officially described herself as bisexual.
